Lead Alloy

An alloy is mixture of two or more metals in a matrix of mother metal. The lead alloys find their use in Grid of Lead Acid Battery plates. The lead is a very soft metal and it does not provide stiffness or strength to Grids. That is why an alloy of Lead , Tin, Antimony and selenium is normally used for grid casting so that plates do not get damaged in service and create short circuit whereby destroying the battery. The selection of alloy for grid casting depends on properties required in particular type of Battery.

Normally in low maintenance or maintenance free batteries, an alloy, which will generate minimum hydrogen gas is used. This may be of Lead-Antimony-Tin- Selenium Type or Lead-Tin-Calcium Type.
